Hi Friends!
This is your Hard Money Lender in Tucson and the Southern Arizona area, Billy A. I wanted to share this moving statement from my friend Cort Chalfant who addressed the Pima Community College Board of Governors last week:
PREPARED STATEMENT BY CORT CHALFANT TO THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, PCC
APRIL 10, 2013
- I would like to talk about leadership.
- I’m not here to lecture but, I am asking you to listen to your friends. You may not immediately recognize it but, I am one of your friends too.
- We have so much in common. I’m not talking about you – as a “Board of Governors”. I’m talking about each of you and I in terms of who we are as people and what makes us tick.
- We share a passion for educating kids so they have the best possible opportunity to fulfill their hopes and dreams. – That is not a sound bite. That is what we feel.
- We understand that as this college goes, to a great extent that is how our community goes. We share a deep belief in public service and recognize that by doing good for this college we are doing good for Tucson as a whole.
- We are compassionate people. Our hearts go out to people who are working hard – and often struggling – to improve their lot in life and we reach out to help – each of us for our own reasons but mostly because it’s in our DNA.
- Finally, each of us has within us, the willingness to put team ahead of self for the good of the team as a whole.
- Dr Even, Mr. Stewart, Mr. Longoria, Ms. Cortez, tonight, as your friend, I’m asking you to rethink your position about continuing on the Board of Governors.
- I am asking you to listen to your friends so you can see that “the horse has already left the barn”. “The ship has sailed”. Please, recognize that by your hanging on, this team can’t move on – it’s stuck just “treading water”.
- We know your intentions are good but, you can’t expect this storm to just blow over. Opposition to your tenure is not temporary, it is just getting started. The longer this takes, the more the team suffers. We’re talking about (a) students; (b) community; and (c) faculty, administrators and staff of the college – in that order.
- for you, I am a fresh face but I think you know:
- I am not a disgruntled employee – current or ex.
- I do not consider myself a community activist.
- I do not have a political agenda.
- I came out of the woodwork because, like so many others, I am appalled at the institutional failings that have occurred under your watch and I can’t stand idly by while I witness more damage being done.
- If it comes to it, recall will take 1-year. Like me, the people that I know don’t want that. Recall should be reserved for only the grossest breaches of public trust and it is divisive. It tears people apart and fuels anger precisely when unity and healing are most needed.
- However, the growing sentiment in the community is that you’re not hearing what everyone is telling you and gross breaches of trust have certainly occurred.
- Please, for the good of the students and this community, when you leave here tonight, re-reflect on your purpose. I’m convinced that if you listen to your heart and to your friends, you will know that you have already done all that you can do.
Very powerful statement. Thanks to Cort Chalfant for sharing this information with us.
That’s it for this time! Make it another great day!
